Hiking paradise in the heart
of the Zillertal Alps

The Schlegeis Reservoir is a hiking paradise in the heart of the Alps and the perfect place for mountain tours and relaxation in the high mountains. Quaint pastures and mountain huts all around invite visitors to linger at their destination.

The Schlegeis Reservoir borders the Zillertal Alps High-Mountain Nature Park, which has served a nature reserve covering 422 km² in the rear section of the Zillertal Valley since 1991. Well-developed routes and hiking trails, as well as numerous mountain huts and shelters, make the region with its impressive backdrop the ideal starting point for easy hikes, medium-difficulty tours, lofty high-altitude trails and athletic summit climbs. This makes the area around the Schlegeis Reservoir the perfect choice for both beginners and experienced alpinists.

Safety first

The Schlegeis Alpine Road and the reservoir are located in a high-alpine region. Please note the following important points:

Always wear suitable footwear and clothing.
Bring enough food and beverages.
Critically assess your fitness and experience level before choosing one of the high-alpine routes.
Research the length and difficulty of the planned route in advance.
Research weather forecasts, road conditions and snow conditions before the trip and choose your equipment accordingly.
Inform family members about your planned route and expected arrival time.
Keep an eye on the weather – conditions can change quickly in the mountains.

Naturparkhaus

In the mountaineering village of Ginzling you will find the Naturparkhaus with a new interactive exhibition and the Alpine library. In summer, the Zillertal Alps Nature Park offers exciting themed tours. The summer programme includes a total of around 200 guided hikes, led by qualified nature park guides and covering over 30 different topics.

Tip: Combined tickets for the Schlegeis Alpine Road and the Nature Park Centre are available in our online shop. Enjoy reduced rates for the drive up to the reservoir and an exciting visit to the exhibition. Admission to the Nature Park Centre is paid on site upon presentation of the combined ticket.

The Nature Park House is surrounded by greenery. It is a modern wooden house with a large window façade in the entrance area.

Hiking tours and refreshment stops

A walk along the shores of the reservoir is a leisurely experience for families with young children. The trail along the Schlegeis shoreline offers a wonderful view of the highest mountain in the Zillertal Alps, the Hochfeiler at 3,509 m high. Quiet spots with benches and deck chairs invite guests to relax along the trail. Tyrolean delicacies are served in the surrounding huts.

A special tip for a hike is the scenic tour to Pfitscherjoch-Haus at 2,277 m above sea level. The route that crosses the border into South Tyrol has been a popular Alpine crossing in the past. All tours in the high mountains have different levels of difficulty and walking times. Always check the trail and weather conditions before you go on a hike or mountain tour.

s’Raschtl & Basecamp #Schlegeis131

BASECAMP #Schlegeis131 includes a booking office for the adventures on offer and via ferrata set hire, and is situated right on the dam wall. At s’Raschtl you will find fresh coffee and food, which you can enjoy on a cosy terrace.

To Basecamp

Dominikushütte

The Dominikushütte is right above the car park on the Schlegeis dam. Enjoy Tyrolean specialities on the sunny terrace and take in the beautiful view of the reservoir and Schlegeis glacier. Rooms with beds and dorm rooms for 4 people are available for overnight stays.

To Dominikushütte

Furtschaglhaus

Walking along the lake, you cross the Schlegeis glacier streams. A little further down the valley is the goods cable car station. Now you head to the hut in the shadow of the Hochfeiler’s north face and the Great Möseler. The hut can accommodate 123 people. The winter room is open all year round and has 13 beds.

To Furtschaglhaus

Friesenberghaus

Friesenberghaus is located at 2,498 metres and offers even more than just its gorgeous view and the view of the Hochfeiler and Großer Möseler. Lake Friesenberg and the Petersköpfl with its “cairn garden” are also worth a visit. Walking time: a good two hours on an easy trail that is also suitable for children.

Olpererhütte

The Olpererhütte is 2,389 m above the Schlegeis reservoir and can be reached in about 1.5 hours and after an elevation gain of 600 metres. Thanks to its location on the south side in Riepenkar, the third highest peak in the Zillertal Alps, visitors can enjoy the sun all day long.

Hike from Pfitscherjochhaus to over 3,500 m and make the most of convenient passes to the neighbouring huts and valleys.

Take a 10-minute walk from the Zamsgatterl car park to the Fischerhütte on the banks of Schlegeis reservoir. You can enjoy fresh smoked trout from the reservoir every day.
