At VERBUND Energie World Malta, you can learn more about the construction of the Kölnbrein Dam from historical photographs. A large relief and an interactive display offer insights into the Malta-Reisseck power plant group. Plus, comprehensive information is available on site about the Malta power plant group, with the newly built Reisseck II underground pumped storage power plant.

From the Airwalk on the dam wall, you can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Malta Valley. But that’s not all: On a guided tour inside the Kölnbrein Dam, our experts will give you deeper insights into how the structure works. The Kölnbrein Dam is the perfect place to experience the harmonious combination of nature and technology.

You will rarely have the opportunity to stand on a glass surface, with a 200-metre clear view into the bare abyss and a breathtaking view of the high-alpine landscape of the Hohe Tauern

You can only truly experience the architecture of the Kölnbrein Dam in all its facets on the Airwalk: when the wall curves over your head and the massive structure made of 2 million m³ of concrete spreads out in front of you — which is almost the volume of the Cheops pyramid (2.6 million m³)

Dam tour

At 200 m high and 626 m wide, the Kölnbrein Dam is the largest in Austria. At peak times, 200 million m³ of water accumulate behind it, which would be enough to fill a bathtub for 1.4 billion people (20% of the world’s population).

Technical values are monitored daily at 2,500 metre points. A dam tour gives you the opportunity to learn more about electricity generation and to get to know inside the dam.

Kölnbrein Dam facts and figures

The Malta Oberstufe VERBUND power plant is a pumped storage power plant located in the town of Brandstatt in the municipality of Malta in Carinthia. It was built between 1974 and 1977 with joint financing from Kelag and Energie AG. The power plant generates 37,870 MWh annually and was put into operation in 1979.
